Installation Video: replacing timing belt drive and thermostat on an Audi A6 (C5) 2.4 - V6 (AML)

Timing belt replacement can be quite time-consuming: a complete overhaul of the timing belt drive can easily take up 3 hours of labour time. In the majority of V6 engines of the Volkswagen group and some 4 cylinder engines of Vauxhall/Opel the thermostat sits behind the timing belt drive system. To replace these difficult-to-reach thermostats, the entire timing belt system including the water pump needs to be removed. So it only makes sense to replace the thermostat at the same time.

A few examples of these types of applications include:

  • Audi A4 2.4 Petrol
  • Audi A4 Cabrio 2.4 Petrol and 2.5 Diesel
  • Audi A6 2.4 & 2.8 Petrol and 2.5 Diesel
  • Audi A8 2.8 Petrol
  • Vauxhall/Opel Astra 1.6 & 1.4 Petrol
  • Vauxhall/Opel Corsa 1.2 & 1.4 Petrol
To demonstrate the different steps of replacing the entire timing belt drive system, water pump and thermostat on these applications, we have developed an Audi A6 (C5) 2.4 - V6 (AML) engine installation video:
